2 years agoA Quick Overview of the Upcoming Live-Action Dragonball Movie
First off I would like to say that I am a HUGE Dragonball fan. I’ve seen all of the anime and even read a few manga (japanese for comics) here and there. So I know all about the abstract anthropromorphic characters, the visually appealing energy blast and the ever popular colorful auras. I’ve always thought a movie would be eye candy for the hardcore anime fans and even a little eye catcher to those who are familiar with it………but ONLY as CGI. As far as live action, I’ll let the content below speak for itself.
In my opinion, which I’m sure you’ll agree, if you want to successfully accomplish the transition from a cartoon to a live action movie, you should make the main character similar to its animated counterpart. Justin Chatwin (Goku) in the photo above, isn’t pulling that off. Honestly, he looks like he’s going to a halloween party, but I’m not the designer so I’ll save my judgement.
James Wong, the director, has said that it is an adaptation to the franchise which makes me believe it won’t be a total duplicate of the Dragonball series, which I am in favor of. With that being said, that doesn’t mean to cast off from the core of what makes the series recognizable. Here are a few examples:

The release date for the movie is April 10, 2009 and is currently in post-production, so I’m not going to say the project is a complete failure already, but it doesn’t look like it’s heading into the right direction. I’ll definitely keep you posted with all the updates leading up to the release date.
Even with all the current flaws with the movie, I’m still anxiously anticipating its release :]
